All-Purpose Prayers

I must admit I reached a stopping point in my Bible.

Reading chronologically through the New Testament was exciting, enlightening and mostly joyful. Then I reached the Book of Revelation and I couldn’t go on. There’s too much stress and anguish in my life right now, I couldn’t handle it. Well, I can certainly handle it, but I don’t want to right now.

There are many days of too much to do. Competing stresses bouncing off of each other to see who can get the biggest nip into me. I’ve been trying to focus on playing to an audience of one — the Lord — and trying to discern which way He wants me to go in life. Most days I don’t know which direction that is….and I fall back on all-purpose prayers to the Almighty.

I like things that are suited for many purposes. Doesn’t everyone? There are a few all-purpose seasoning blends I use for cooking when I’m pressed for time. (Italian blends for Italian, Indian blends for Indian–you get the picture.)  And I love my summer casual uniform of capri pants, good T-shirt and costume jewlery. I can vary it, but mostly not spend too much time thinking about what to wear.

But all-purpose prayers to the Almighty? That sounds disrespectful, but I’ve decided it is better than not having a connection to Him at all. When I have difficulty even verbalizing to Him what my prayers are for the day, I turn to Psalm 103. All the verses are important, but I tend to focus on 1-5. These words have calmed my spirit, re-energized me and helped me focus so often, I have been calling on them at least once a week recently. The words that follow are from the New King James version.

Bless the Lord, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name!

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits:

Who forgives all your iniquities,

Who heals all your diseases,

Who redeems your life from destruction,

Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies,

Who satisfies your mouth with good things,

So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

Try this all-purpose prayer and see if the Lord calms your spirit, gives you guidance and hope. My prayer is that these verses will remind you — as it does for me — that He will not leave you or forsake you.

Blessings and kind regards to you all.

  1. Diane, your all-purpose prayer is one of my favorite Christian songs. I remember singing it in choir at Concord Methodist Church when we were growing up. I hope it helps you with the stresses. Love, Deb
